What Happens to Immigrants Who Are Detained?

by Ann Abbott
Not only is Spanish community service learning a wonderful tool for teaching Spanish and culture to our students, it also forces them to analyze many of the socio-political beliefs that they and others they know hold about immigration and criminality.

Even though our local community has not experienced a large-scale redada (raid), our students have seen some of the people they meet in the community "disappear."

A report out today shows that most of the detained undocumented immigrants in our nation's jails are not criminals.

It's important that our students learn the facts about immigration and the challenges immigrants face, not the hype. Reports like this one can be the basis of how we help our students to think about immigration policies in this country.
